To test your understanding of the work we have done on audience, you must complete the following task:

1. Find a film poster. You only have to look as far as the walls in C11 - you are welcome to come in at lunchtimes to make notes. If you prefer, you can find film posters at the following websites:

If you are looking for a particular poster, try each site and see which one gives you the best quality image (ie the highest resolution).

2. Examine the poster carefully. Print out a copy for reference.

3. Decide who the target audience is for this film.

4.Write a list of the ways in which this film poster tries to attract its target audience. You should try to find at least seven different ways and consider the following:

  • Colour
  • Use of Stars
  • Typography (size and style of letters)
  • Signs & symbols
  • Layout and overall design concept (does it remind you of anything else)

Also consider if an audience needs foreknowledge to understand what the film is about. Does the poster create an enigma? Write your list as a series of bullet points and make sure they do not overlap or repeat each other.

5. Use your bullet points to write a short analysis of the poster. You should write 300-500 words explaining exactly how this poster attracts an audience to the film. Attach your printed copy of the poster to your assignment.

6.Hand it in next Thursday (18 September).
